Technical Details:
The heartwood of butternut is chestnut brown with darker zones while the sapwood is white. It has a satiny, straight grain texture that resembles that of black walnut. It lacks stiffness and is moderately weak in bending strength and end-wise compression. It is somewhat stable once it has been dried however its durability is rated below black walnut. Butternut is often used in furniture, interior trim and paneling. Historically, it was used in many church altars. It carves nicely. Butternut's sap can also be made into sweet, rich syrup.
